Relevant bachelor's degrees at the University of Innsbruck:

Criteria for the determination of equivalence:

Admission to the master's degree programme may also be possible if a student has completed a bachelor's degree in a relevant related field. As part of the determination of equivalence, the following core areas of the completed bachelor's degree programme will be assessed:

  • At least 95 ECTS-Credits in subject-didactics and subject-didactics for Media Education
  • At least 40 ECTS-Credits in Educational Studies

In the event that equivalence has been established in principle but with certain qualifications missing for full equivalence, supplemental examinations may be required. These examinations must be completed during the master degree programme.

Recommended Course Sequence

The exemplary course sequence given below is recommended for full-time students beginning their study programme in the winter semester. The table shows one possible course sequence for the bachelor's programme and is not compulsory. Delays resulting from repeated examinations are not taken into account.

The standard duration of the study programme is 4 semesters or 120 ECTS-Credits, whereby according to the Universities Act of 2002, a workload of 1,500 (real) hours per academic year must be fulfilled, corresponding to 60 ECTS-Credits (one ECTS-Credit is equivalent to a workload of 25 hours).

Qualification Profile and Skills

The Secondary School Teacher Training Programme (General Education) qualifies its graduates as teachers in the selected subjects of general education / specialisations for all secondary schools (Neue Mittelschule, Polytechnische Schule, Academic Secondary Schools,  Intermediate and Higher Technical and Vocational Schools). This study programme also meets the requirements for teaching in intermediate and higher schools in the South Tyrol. In the Master’s programme the knowledge and skills acquired in the Bachelor’s programme is broadened and deepened. Graduates are able to solve problems of teaching in secondary schools in an innovative and creative way. They are able to independently deal with scientific or artistic topics resp. with regards to contents and by using appropriate methods. They are able to participate in expert discourse and to independently acquire more specialist, subject-didactical and pedagogical knowledge and to implement it in their teaching.

The Master’s Programme Secondary School Teacher Training (General Education) with specialisation in Media Pedagogy enables its graduates to head and design complex media-based working, learning and education contexts. They are able to develop adequate research designs for problems in the fields of Media Pedagogy, to select and apply appropriate methods and to use instruments for evaluation and quality development in the context of media-pedagogical topics in a responsible way.

Expected Learning Outcomes

Graduates have specialised knowledge in the field of media didactics and media education and are able to find and implement solutions for actual media-pedagogical problems, to plan and evaluate strategic developments and to provide suitable advising offers. Based on their expert competences and skills, they are able to develop innovative solutions at the interfaces of issues in media pedagogy as well as aspects of didactics and content and to integrate their knowledge from different areas.

Future Prospects: Occupational Profiles and Career Opportunities

The Master’s Programme Secondary School Teacher Training (General Education) qualifies for teaching at secondary schools. Based on the Bachelor’s Programme, the graduates acquire the competences needed for teaching in a way to meet the educational requirements of a developing school and society. 
With the qualifications acquired during the Master’s Programme, further job opportunities in the fields of the respective study programme and in the field of education, such as social and youth work or adult education, open up.

In addition, the Master’s Programme with the specialisation Media Pedagogy prepares in particular for conceptional, organisational and didactic fields of activity in the media, in culture and media education for all age groups. It communicates the fundamentals required for knowledge transfer in media institutions, archives, museums and companies. Important occupational fields are also in public relations and in continuing education. Moreover, the Master’s Programme prepares for an academic career in disciplines of education and media science.
