ArtiFEM - Artificial Intelligence | Feminist Theory | Education | Media

Funding: RMU networking in innovative projects
Duration: 1.10.2024 - 30.09.2026 (2 years)
Since 02/2026, the University of Innsbruck, Department of Media Education and Digital Literacy has been part of the ArtiFEM consortium

Abstract

Developments in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and their consequences currently occupy an interdisciplinary field of research. It is being discussed that by using certain data sets to train self-learning systems, discriminatory structures from the past and present are automatically reproduced and thus shape the future.

The ArtiFEM project takes a critical look at the perpetuation of discrimination and inequality through AI applications and examines the implications with regard to educational inequalities and social inequality and thus for education.

The aim of ArtiFEM is to establish a network to develop this innovative field of research at the interface of AI, education and feminism. The project is based on a broad understanding of feminism - including queer-feminist and postcolonial perspectives. Workshops and joint publications, centred on collaborative discussions of relevant literature on AI in the educational context on the one hand and from the field of feminist theories on the other, form the basis for the medium-term goal of a comprehensive long-term application. The aim is to establish a feminist reading of AI developments in the field of education within the RMU network.
