History and political education
"The school has no more important task than to teach strict thinking, careful judgement and consistent reasoning."
Friedrich Nietzsche "The human all-too-human"
Mission statement
The Department of History and Civic Education at the Institute of Didactics at the University of Innsbruck coordinates and promotes empirical and theory-based research and teaching in history didactics and civic education. This is done in close cooperation with colleagues from Teacher Education West, for example through the joint organisation of academic events and publications. The aim is also to engage in a wide-ranging exchange with the specialised sciences, other subject didactics and school education.
History didactics and civic education act as an interface between universities, schools and other educational institutions in order to meet the socio-political challenges. Those working in the field of history and civic education therefore endeavour to transfer research findings into school practice. This includes participating in further training seminars for teachers throughout Austria, organising events for pupils (e.g. political education action days) and writing textbooks and other teaching suggestions.
Finally, a key task is the organisation and implementation of teacher training in the fields of history didactics and political education. The team prepares students for their professional teaching activities, the core of which is the vivid presentation of historical and political science knowledge and contexts in order to promote historical and political thinking in a pluralistic society. Based on the secondary school curricula in Austria and South Tyrol, particular attention is paid to the competence-orientation of historical and political learning, historical and political didactic principles and conceptual learning; in addition, central research methods are taught.
