Our PhD programme: The next step in your academic career

The PhD programme Economics and Statistics programme provides in-depth theoretical and methodological knowledge to enable students to work independently on economic and socio-political issues. The programme is taught entirely in English and prepares doctoral students for an academic career in a national and international environment.

Graduates of this programme are able to

  • Conduct economic and statistical research at an international level,
  • analyse economic and social problems using theoretical and empirical methods,
  • communicate complex interrelationships in an understandable and target-group-orientated way,
  • develop, apply for and carry out independent research projects,
  • contribute to the international scientific discussion in the fields of economics and statistics.

As the Department of Banking and Finance, we support the programme with specialist expertise in empirical financial research, financial stability and quantitative methods. Our research and teaching offer doctoral students an excellent basis for their academic development and international networking.

As the Department of Banking and Finance, we make a targeted contribution to research-oriented training within the programme - particularly in the areas of empirical financial research, data science and quantitative methods.

The courses can be accessed via LFU:online

Our courses:

  • Advanced Studies

This course provides an in-depth analysis of key concepts in financial economics. Students will acquire a working knowledge of major theories in different areas of financial economics which enables them to access the current state of the literature and to develop their own research question.

  • Generic Skills

The course teaches basic and advanced skills in programming using the general-purpose programming language Python with a focus on the management of (un)structured data.

After the course, students are able to independently implement ideas for empirical projects from data acquisition to data analysis.

This course trains doctoral students in identifying research questions and formulating a research strategy in the early stages of their research, in structuring and writing a paper, in choosing and submitting to a journal, and in communicating with editors, referees and the scientific community at large. These skills are transferred through a combination of lectures, group discussions, and hands-on work on samples of scientific writing. The lecturer’s experience as author, reviewer and editor ensures the success of this course.

  • Core Competences

Participants understand the financial aspects and challenges related to sustainability and climate change. In particular, the course provides participants with theoretical concepts from the areas of asset pricing, corporate finance, financial regulation and financial institutions that are relevant to sustainability and climate finance. Participants are thereby empowered to make an own contribution to the academic discourse on ESG, sustainability and climate change.
