Austria and ESA

Josef Aschbacher

Director General, European Space Agency, Paris, France

Austria, with its thriving space sector and future-oriented areas of expertise, is an integral part of the European Space Agency (ESA) and Europe’s activities and ambitions in space. This presentation will give an overview Austria’s involvement in ESA as well as ESA’s programmatic priorities and future ambition, manifested through the Agenda 2025. The 2020s are a crucial time for Europe to position itself in the booming global use of space and Austria is an integral part of that development.

Having recently celebrated 35 years of membership in ESA, Austria, through its Space Strategy 2030+, set out ambitious goals and actions, fully in line with ESA Agenda 2025 and the plan to accelerate the use of space in Europe. In addition to Austria’s strong presence in Earth Observation, Telecommunications and Technology, Carmen Possnig, Austrian national, has been selected as Member of the ESA Astronaut Reserve in 2022. This presentation will further discuss the benefits of space for Austrian society and economy, while also showing the impacts ESA programmes have on a global scale.
