  • Time for science: Ancient cultural contact
An abandoned ancient city on Monte Iato in western Sicily is the focus of archaeologist Birgit Öhlinger's research. Due to its location, Monte Iato was considered a hub for various societies and cultures in ancient times. The indigenous population “mixed” with the newly arrived Greeks and Phoenicians. Through excavations on site, the archaeologist is attempting to determine how cultural contact took place and what social changes it brought about. The scientist is placing particular emphasis on cults, rituals, and religion.
