Establishment of the germ layers (ecto-, endo-, and mesoderm) and body axes is the first thing happening to the embryos during development. Just 20 years ago, evolutionary developmental biologists could say that they had a good understanding of when germ layers and body axes appeared in the evolution and how they were regulated at the level of genes. However, recent research on cnidarians, especially on the sea anemone Nematostella vectensis, challenged many of the old views proving some of them totally wrong and others possibly wrong. In this talk, I will show what we learnt about the evolution of axial patterning mechanisms in animals.
