Tirols oldest artefact recovered from Tischofer Cave

Tirols oldest artefact recovered from Tischofer Cave

Paleolithic archaeologist and HIMAT-PI Joachim Pechtl and his team re-excavated the famous Tischofer Cave (Kaisertal, Tyrol) during the 2023 and 2025 field seasons. Near the base of the sediment succession at the cave mouth, they recovered Paleolithic artifacts. Preliminary optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating by M. Meyer’s group indicates a burial age of ca. 100.000 years for these sediments, making the artifacts the oldest known evidence of human presence in this part of the Eastern Alps.
