Academic publishing success is often a bumpy road—full of detours and setbacks that never appear on our CVs. Learning how to cope with failure and rejection is therefore a core scholarly skill. In this interactive workshop, Prof. Dwayne Gremler will discuss common missteps that occur across a research project’s lifecycle and offer strategies for responding to and learning from manuscript rejections. Open to early-career and senior scholars across business disciplines, the session will include a hands-on discussion of a previously rejected manuscript (distributed in advance) to illustrate some of the most common issues.
Professor Dwayne Gremler (Bowling Green State University) holds a PhD from Arizona State University. His area of expertise concerns marketing issues related to the delivery of service. He has published on this topic in top tier journals such as Journal of Marketing, Journal of Service Research, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, and Journal of Retailing, among others. In 2015 Dr. Gremler was appointed Distinguished Teaching Professor (of Marketing) in the College of Business by the Board of Trustees at Bowling Green State University (one of the highest designations that the university bestows upon a faculty member). In 2022, he was also appointed Distinguished Research Professor at BGSU; he is the only faculty member in the history of BGSU to have received both appointments.
Dr. Gremler’s research is concerned with customer loyalty in service businesses, customer-employee interactions in service delivery, service guarantees, servicescapes, and word-of-mouth communication. Dr. Gremler’s articles have won several awards, including the “Best Service Research Paper” published in 2011 (from SERVSIG) for an article published in the Journal of Marketing. He also received the “Excellence in Service Research Award” from the Journal of Service Research for the best article of 2002. Dr. Gremler is a co-author (with Valarie Zeithaml and Mary Jo Bitner) of one of the leading service textbooks in the field, entitled: Services Marketing: Integrating Customer Focus Across the Firm (8th Edition). For the past decade he has served as Associate Editor for the Journal of Service Research.
Following the workshop (from 5:30 p.m. onwards), please join us for a reception celebrating the launch of the new research center TOC.
