Jewish Responses to Roman Imperial Violence
The Romans and their empire are identified as an extraordinary military power in both ancient sources and modern scholarship. This lecture will tackle Roman imperial violence through the prism of the Roman emphasis on their exceptional military skills and their superiority in the art of warfare, as expressed through both literary and visual media. It will explore the ways in which the exposure to these Roman norms and practices impacted Jewish discourses about (Jewish) military valour and the use of force to solve conflicts, by looking at the work of the first century exegete Philo of Alexandria and a selection of rabbinic texts.

Katell Berthelot is a CNRS Professor at the University of Aix–Marseille in France. Her research focuses on the history of Jews and Judaism in the Greco-Roman world. She has received an ERC Consolidator Grant to work on the political and religious challenge posed by the Roman Empire to the Jews (www.judaism-and-rome.org) and published Jews and their Roman Rivals: Pagan Rome’s Challenge to Israel (Princeton University Press, 2021), which won the National Jewish Book Award in the category “Scholarship” in 2021.
