9th Annual CMBI Meeting Innsbruck 2024

CMBI celebrated its 20th birthday

The Center for Molecular Biosciences Innsbruck (CMBI), the research focus for molecular biosciences at the University of Innsbruck, celebrated its 20th birthday in 2024. In the fall, the top-class 9th CMBI meeting took place in the Congress Park Igls.

In recent years, the CMBI has established itself as an important component of biomolecular and biomedical research in Austria and enjoys a high level of international visibility. It brings together researchers from numerous scientific disciplines ranging from molecular biology and genetics to chemistry, pharmacy and biophysics. Together, they focus primarily on the structure, function and interaction of biological macromolecules and low-molecular substances for cell growth, metabolism and the development of organisms. The CMBI was founded 20 years ago as part of the University of Innsbruck's newly established priority system. On 1 and 2 October 2004, the first CMBI meeting took place at the Grillhof in Vill, organized by Klaus Bister, Bernd Pelster and Jörg Striessnig. Today, the focus comprises a total of 27 research groups from the Faculties of Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacy as well as Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science.

The 9th CMBI meeting took place at the end of September 2024, organized by Ronald Micura, Frank Edenhofer and Alexandra Koschak and featuring some top-class guest speakers such as Henry Colecraft from Columbia University, Stefano Pluchino from the University of Cambridge and Jieping Zhu from the ETH Lausanne. Current results from various research groups involved in the CMBI were also presented. The poster prizes for young scientists were again awarded during the meeting. The winners were Yuliia Nikonishyna from the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Institute of Pharmacy, Anna Ploner from the Institute of Organic Chemistry, Sandra Senn from the Institute of Molecular Biology, Immanuel Plangger from the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Angeliki Spathopoulou from the Institute of Molecular Biology.

7th CMBI Meeting Innsbruck 2018

The 7th CMBI Meeting of the Innsbruck University took place on September 19 to 20 2018 in the Grillhof/Vill. The high attendance confirmed the importance of exchange of experiences for the young scientists. It was a good opportunity to stimulate new collaboration between the research groups of the CMBI. Thematically, the meeting was focused on signaling mechanisms, methods and applications, RNA and protein structure dynamics and neuron disorder and disease. The big success of the meeting was also reflected in the lively discussions during the oral presentations and poster sessions. As in the years before the best talks and posters were awarded. The winners of the CMBI Award are:

Belinda Artes, Department of Zoology; Michael Palasser, Department of Organic Chemistry; Kevin Erharter, Department of Organic Chemistry; Christina Kalchschmid, Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry; Philipp Tschaikner, Department of Biochemistry; Larissa Traxler, Department of Molecular Biology.

6th Annual CMBI Meeting Innsbruck 2016

On March 3rd and 4th, the CMBI held its 6th annual joint meeting in Gnadenwald focusing on drugs and biotechnology, proteomics and metabolomics, protein structure, signaling, disease and stress mechanisms. About 120 – mostly young – researchers from CMBI member labs gathered in order to share their newest Life Science findings in more than 70 oral and poster presentations and to initiate discussion and interaction. Three impressive, high-profile plenary speakers, Christian Griesinger (MPI Göttingen), Remco Sprangers (MPI Tübingen), Almut Schulze (Uni Würzburg), and an inspiring Introduction Lecture held by the newly appointed faculty member Frank Edenhofer complemented the program. As in previous years, three prizes were selected with the help of the plenary speakers for the best young scientists’ conference presentations. Two poster prizes were awarded to Marina Frener (Institute for Organic Chemistry) and Armin Wilfinger (Institute of Molecular Biology). The award for the best short talk was given to Julia Wunderer (Institute of Zoology).

7th Life Science Meeting Innsbruck 2015

On February 27th, 2015 the CMBI, together with the Biocenter of the Medical University of Innsbruck, welcomed the local scientific community to the 7th Life Science Meeting, their annual joint meeting. This time the meeting was held together with the 9th MCBO Science Day of the FWF-funded doctoral excellence program Molecular Cell Biology and Oncology.  Many young scientists took the opportunity to discuss scientific results at their posters, and talks from international invited experts were complemented by presentations of young researchers from the CMBI, Biocenter and MCBO communities. CMBI scientists Eduard Stefan (Biochemistry) and Peter Ladurner (Zoology) gave impressive insight into their recent research findings.
