Research interests

The demand for environmentally friendly, flexible and strong glues is expanding. Biological adhesives provide a promising resource for the development of synthetic counterparts. However, the knowledge on the composition of biological adhesives is scarce, limiting the advancement of bio-inspired glues. My research is mainly focused on the identification and characterization of biological adhesives in aquatic invertebrates. Biological adhesives are complex secretions that are used by the animals for varying purposes, including securely attaching themselves, locomoting and capturing prey. I am driven by the desire to understand and describe these biological systems from the morphological to molecular level. Therefore, I commonly use a multitude of techniques, ranging from transcriptomics, proteomics, RNA interference, double-fluorescent in situ hybridization, histology, immunohistochemistry, confocal- and electron microscopy. Overall, my work led to new models for temporary adhesion in several aquatic invertebrate species. Detailed understanding of the natural systems may pave the way for the development of sustainable, non-toxic, biomimetic glues.

Short CV

I studied Biology at the Universität Innsbruck and was fascinated by the astonishing adhesion and regeneration capacities of marine flatworms. I dedicated my Master and PhD thesis to investigate the adhesive organs morphology and adhesive composition of flatworms in the laboratory of Dr. Peter Ladurner. After defending my PhD thesis in 2017, I moved to Belgium for a two years Post-Doctoral stay in the laboratory of the leading expert in temporary adhesion Dr. Patrick Flammang (University of Mons). My research focus was on the identification and characterization of adhesive proteins in sea stars. In 2019, I returned to the Universität Innsbruck as independent Post-doc, finalizing my work on sea stars and starting a new project on Hydra adhesion in 2022.
