Publishing fund of the University of Innsbruck

Not all open access journals charge publication fees for the publication of articles; especially non-commercial publishers often receive institutional funding. However, many publishers and journals are relying on article processing charges (APC) as a business model for open access. To assist the University of Innsbruck's scientists financially and organizationally, a central publishing fund for the co-financing of those charges of open access journals was created.

 

 Criteria for funding

1. Eligible for funding are publications in open access journals listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) that carry out appropriate quality assurance measures (e.g. peer review). The article has to be openly accessible directly after publishing as well as licensed for dissemination.
   
2. Not eligible are publications written as part of projects that receive OA funding (e.g. projects of the EU or the Austrian Science Fund FWF). We also do not assist in buying out articles of generally subscription-based ("hybrid") journals. This also includes articles in so-called mirror journals, which are listed in the DOAJ as open access versions of their closed access parent journals, but are essentially a special form of hybrid journals.
   
3. We assist with funding for a maximum of three publications per year and author or work group.
4. The maximum funding amount out of the publication fund is EUR 1,000, with obligatory partial funding through the faculty, the institute and/or the work group. The publication fund doubles the funds supplied by the faculty, the institute and/or the work group up to a maximum of EUR 1,000.
5. The lead, submitting or corresponding author has to be a member of the University of Innsbruck. This is to be made clear by an indication of the respective affiliation to the University of Innsbruck.
   
6. The funding by the University of Innsbruck has to be acknowledged in the paper.
7. All open access articles funded by the University of Innsbruck will be deposited in the university's repository for publications. Authors are responsible for entring the bibliographic data of the publication in the research documentation database (FLD).

 

Please note that the publication fees for monographs and edited volumes (book processing charges (BPC)) cannot be funded in full. However, funding in terms of the aforementioned criteria and up to the maximum funding amount is possible and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
In its "Book Publications"-programme, the FWF is funding open access monographs, edited volumes and proceedings up to a maximum of 22,000 euros.
