Sewage sludge treatment: Options 2030 in the province of Salzburg

Client:

Office of the Salzburg Provincial Government, Department of Nature and Environmental Protection, Industry

Implementation period:

02/2024 - 10/2024

Project description:

The future of sewage sludge disposal in the federal state of Salzburg is strongly influenced by the federal government's sewage sludge strategy (see Federal Waste Management Plan 2023 Part 11, StraPhos2 study, in particular the planned amendment to the Waste Incineration Ordinance), the increasing move away from direct application to soil (which has been banned in Salzburg since 2002) and the associated increase in demand for plants for the utilisation and treatment of sewage sludge.

On behalf of the Office of the Salzburg Provincial Government, the various options for future sewage sludge treatment in the province of Salzburg are being analysed. Based on a presentation of the current situation (current sewage sludge quantities, disposal routes, disposal costs, etc.) and taking into account future framework conditions, the various options for sewage sludge treatment are to be evaluated technically, legally and economically.
