Project description:

Fats in wastewater cause problems in the sewer system and additional oxygen demand in the wastewater treatment plant. On the other hand, renewable energy can be obtained from the fats. The installation of grease separators in catering establishments and businesses is state of the art. In practice, however, the situation regarding the use and operation of grease separators is often unsatisfactory. However, there is a lack of reliable data to quantify the impact of uninstalled or inadequately maintained grease separators.

The project aims to help identify technical, economic and ecological optimisation potential. To this end, the effects of optimised grease trap maintenance on the separation efficiency of the systems and the wastewater pollution of the catchment area will be investigated using a model area. An optimised grease trap maintenance concept will be developed and implemented for the model catchment area and the effects on the wastewater will be recorded. Furthermore, the potential of different collection systems with regard to reducing the input of pollutants into the wastewater (fats, microplastics) and increasing the collection volume of used fats will be investigated. The input of microplastics into the environment via grease separators will be investigated using the example of wastewater treatment plant grease collection. Waste fats can be used to generate renewable energy, and the quality of the collected fats for the production of biodiesel is to be determined. Furthermore, the economic and ecological effects of the optimised concept are to be investigated. A key point is the implementation of the knowledge gained in the final phase of the project. To this end, various associations and stakeholders have already expressed their interest in participating in the run-up to the application.
