Departments / Institutions

The Text Music Department in the Romania is a documentation and research centre in the field of Romance text music that is unique in the German-speaking world.

It was established in 1985 at the University of Innsbruck and affiliated with the Institute of Romance Studies. Since then, it has been dedicated to archiving artifacts in which text and music meet or overlap. The specific research areas are:

  • modern popular song forms such as chanson, pop, rock, rap, political protest songs, world music, etc.
  • traditional hybrid forms of text and music such as opera, operetta, zarzuela, musicals, etc.
  • variations of Romance art and folk songs
  • recitation texts with instrumental accompaniment
  • recordings of literary texts (some with music, some without)

The countries of origin include France, French-speaking countries, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Latin America.

The Text Music Department in the Romania has an extensive collection of sound recordings (LPs, CDs, cassettes) which is supplemented by a well-organized and specialized library.

The collection also includes special areas such as the Centre d'étude de la chanson québécoise and special collections such as the Pierre Seguy Collection. In recent years, the Text Music Department in the Romania has also been increasingly entrusted with the archiving and administration of estates and various other collections (seesound recordings from Austria, Germany and Quebec).
