Studies Induction and Orientation Stage (STEOP)
(1) The following exams have to be taken during the studies induction and orientation phase, which takes place in the first semester:
- School as an Educational Institution and Role of the Teacher, VO 2, 2 ECTS-Credits
- Survey of German Linguistics, VO 2, 4 ECTS-Credits
(2) Before the full completion of the introductory study and orientation phase, students can participate in courses amounting to 22 ECTS credits.
Recommended Course Sequence
The exemplary course sequence given below is recommended for full-time students beginning their study programme in the winter semester. The table shows one possible course sequence for the bachelor's programme and is not compulsory. Delays resulting from repeated examinations are not taken into account.
The standard duration of the study programme is 6 semesters or 180 ECTS-Credits, whereby according to the Universities Act of 2002, a workload of 1,500 (real) hours per academic year must be fulfilled, corresponding to 60 ECTS-Credits (one ECTS-Credit is equivalent to a workload of 25 hours).

Qualification Profile and Skills
The Secondary School Teacher Training Programme (General Education) qualifies its graduates as teachers in the selected subjects of general education / specializations for all secondary schools (Neue Mittelschule, Polytechnische Schule, Academic Secondary Schools, Intermediate and Higher Technical and Vocational Schools). This study programme also meets the requirements for teaching in intermediate and higher schools in the South Tyrol *. It consists of a Bachelor’s Programme and a subsequent Master’s Programme. It covers training in general education science, a pedagogical-practical training and a subject-specific and subject-didactic education in the two selected teaching subjects.
In the Bachelor’s Programme Secondary School Teacher Training in the teaching subject of German students deal with historic and contemporary German language and literature as well as with the related socio-cultural and societal processes in a scientific way. On the basis of a solid professional competence, they can meet the educational and teaching tasks as well as the didactic requirements in such a way that the lessons correspond both to the age-specific requirements of the pupils and the living environment of the adolescents as well as to the different specific educational goals of the different school types. In principle the education also considers social, political and intercultural opportunities and perspectives of dealing with language and literature so that cultural diversity and mobility can be perceived as a chance and task. Although the teacher training programme for German serves the preparation for teaching German at secondary schools, the graduates also acquire skills and abilities which are of importance beyond the vocational field of schools, for example in adult education.

Expected Learning Outcomes
Graduates have in-depth knowledge in the fields of German linguistics and literary science as well as subject-specific didactics. They are able to fulfil the educational and teaching tasks as well as the methodological-didactical requirements for providing lessons corresponding to the age-specific requirements of the pupils and the specific educational aims in the subject of German in different school types of the secondary level (general education).
Graduates of the Bachelor’s programme are able to orientate on the current state of research in German studies and didactics as well as the educational requirements of a developing school and society. On this basis they acquire skills that characterize teachers who are successful in school reality.
Future Prospects: Occupational Profiles and Career Opportunities
Graduates of the Bachelor’s Programme Secondary School Teacher Training (General Education) are admitted to the corresponding Master’s Programme and can provisionally start their teaching service in the chosen general education subject in secondary schools to complete the Induction and Orientation Phases.
