Concrete tips

Did you know?

These tips help you to optimise your own learning behaviour and improve your academic performance in the long term.

The combination of planning, active learning methods, self-reflection and targeted use of support services forms the basis for more success in your studies.

1. Set and plan learning goals

Formulate clear, realistic learning goals and divide large tasks into small, achievable stages. The SMART formula (Specific, Measurable, Attractive, Realistic, Time-bound) can help to better structure goals.

Create a weekly or study plan to keep track of assignments, exams and important dates.

2. Structure learning material and learn actively

Structure the learning material, recognise connections and use mind maps, summaries or index cards to link content and retain it better.

Active learning, e.g. by applying knowledge to examples, making your own notes or discussing in learning groups, promotes understanding and memorisation.

3. Time management and breaks

Focus on effective time management, e.g. with the Pomodoro technique (25 minutes of concentrated work, 5 minutes break).

Plan regular breaks and use them actively, e.g. for short walks or relaxation exercises to maintain concentration.

4. Recognise your own strengths and weaknesses

Use your strengths in a targeted way and work on weaknesses through targeted exercises or support, e.g. through tutorials or study groups.

Adapt your learning methods to your individual learning type (visual, auditory, communicative, motor).

5. Strengthen motivation and self-discipline

Record your successes to stay motivated and don't get discouraged when you have setbacks.

Write to-do lists and tick off completed tasks to make progress visible.

6 Use support and resources

Attend lectures, prepare for them and seek dialogue with lecturers if anything is unclear.

Use digital learning opportunities, exercises, self-tests and online resources to deepen your knowledge.

7. Study groups and exchange

Network with fellow students to learn together, clarify questions and motivate each other.
