Supplementary Exam Greek
For certain degree programmes, proof of knowledge of Ancient Greek is required.
You can find out which programmes are affected here:
Depending on your previous educational background, you will need to take either the Supplementary Exam Ancient Greek or an equivalent examination.
No. The Supplementary Exam Greek is not a course credit, but an entry requirement for certain degree programmes. It is therefore not possible to have it recognised as part of your degree.
The Language Centre does not currently offer a dedicated preparation course.
We would be happy to provide you with information, on request, about suitable preparation options at other institutions.
The exam is usually held at the University of Innsbruck on the Innrain Campus (Innrain 52d, 6020 Innsbruck). You will receive information about the exam location and classroom by e-mail after the registration deadline.
A valid photo ID, a Greek-German dictionary (e.g., Griechisch-deutsches Schul- und Handwörterbuch von Gemoll, Langenscheidts Großwörterbuch Altgriechisch-Deutsch) and writing utensils.
For students of the University of Innsbruck, the first attempt is free of charge, provided that knowledge of Greek is a prerequisite for their degree programme.

In the exam, you will translate an original Greek text (prose) of approximately 140-160 words – or a slightly adapted version – into German, using a bilingual dictionary.
You will be given a brief note on the context or a thematic classification of the text passage.
The exam text consists of either
- a self-contained text or
- two correspondingly shorter, self-contained texts.
The text contains key grammatical structures that are relevant to the exam.
Yes. You may use a Greek-German dictionary (e.g., Gemoll: Greek-German School and Pocket Dictionary or Langenscheidt Comprehensive Dictionary of Ancient Greek-German).
Grammar books, verb tables or other aids are not permitted.
The Supplementary Exam Greek is a written exam.
The exam lasts 3 hours (180 minutes).
The exam assesses whether the translation is factually accurate and conveys the intended meaning. The key criteria are comprehension of the text and how closely the translation adheres to the original.
Grading is based on an adapted version of the evaluation model used for the standardised Austrian school leaving assessment rubric for Greek.
Grading System
- Points are awarded for predefined units of meaning.
- In addition, performance in the areas of vocabulary, morphology, and syntax is evaluated based on defined criteria (checkpoints).
- A standardized grading sheet serves as the basis for grading.
Grading Scale (max. 40 points)
- 36-40 points: Very Good (1)
- 31-35 points: Good (2)
- 26-30 points: Satisfactory (3)
- 20-25 points: Sufficient (4)
- 0-19 points: Fail (5)
The exam is passed if at least 51 per cent of the maximum number of points is achieved.
Students at the University of Innsbruck
can view and print their exam results via LFU:online approximately five working days after the exam. This serves as proof of proficiency in (Ancient) Greek.
External participants and University of Innsbruck staff
will receive their certificate in digital form via e-mail.

Supplemantary Exam Latin
For certain degree programmes, proof of knowledge of Latin is required.

The Supplementary Exam Latin is intended for students who have not yet demonstrated the proficiency in Latin required for their degree program.
For law students, a separate Supplementary Exam Latin tailored specifically to the law program is offered.
The Supplementary Exam Latin for Law Students is specifically aimed at law students.
The exam content is tailored to the requirements of the specialist exam in Roman Private Law.
Yes, in principle this is possible.
However, if you are studying another degree programme in which Latin is a compulsory subject (e.g., English and American Studies or History) and have not attended a Preparation Course for the Supplementary Exam Latin for Law Students, we advise against taking the exam.
The content of the exam is specifically tailored to the requirements of a law degree.
Yes. A pass in the Supplementary Exam Latin for Law Students also counts as proof of proficiency for other degree programmes requiring Latin (e.g., English and American Studies, History).
Conversely, a successfully passed general Supplementary Latin exam is also recognised as proof of proficiency for the study of law.

Other dictionaries, grammar books or verb tables are not permitted.
Compact dictionaries (e.g., Stowasser Primus, Schülerduden) are only recommended in combination with a more comprehensive dictionary.

The exam consists of two parts:
1. Latin legal terminology
In this part, your knowledge of specialist legal terminology is tested in the form of a vocabulary test. The test is based on a provided list of Latin terms and phrases from the field of law.
A Latin-German dictionary is not permitted in this part of the exam.
2. Translation of a specialist text
In the second part, you will translate an original Latin text (which may be adapted) of approximately 100-120 words from the field of legal literature (e.g., from Gaius’s Institutiones) into German.
The use of a Latin-German dictionary is permitted for this part of the examination.
Prerequisites are:
- Basic knowledge of Latin morphology and syntax
- Passive basic vocabulary at the level of standard textbooks (e.g. Medias in res!, Latinum, Cursus Brevis)
- Practice in translating specialist legal texts
- First part of the exam (vocabulary test): Dictionaries are not permitted.
- Second part of the exam (translation): The use of a Latin-German dictionary is permitted.
The Supplementary Exam Latin for Law Students is a written exam.
The exam lasts 3 hours (180 minutes).
The exam consists of two parts:
Part 1: Legal terminology (vocabulary test)
Candidates are assessed on their ability to correctly render Latin terms and phrases from legal terminology into German.
Maximum: 12 points
Part 2: Translation
The assessment focuses on a translation that is factually correct and conveys the intended meaning. The key criteria are comprehension of the text and accuracy in relation to the original text.
The assessment is based on the grading scheme used for the standardised Austrian school leaving assessment rubric for Latin.
Maximum: 28 points
- 11 points for units of meaning
- 17 points for linguistic criteria (checkpoints)
Grading System
- Part 1: 30 per cent
- Part 2: 70 per cent
Grading Scale (max. 40 points)
- 36-40 points: Very good (1)
- 31-35 points: Good (2)
- 26–30 points: Satisfactory (3)
- 20-25 marks: Sufficient (4)
- 0-19 marks: Fail (5)
The exam is considered passed if at least 51 per cent of the total points are achieved (at least 20 out of 40 marks).

Language Proficiency Test for Semester Abroad
This service is aimed at students of the University of Innsbruck who are taking part in an international exchange programme (e.g., Erasmus+, Joint Study) as part of their studies and require proof of their foreign language proficiency for this purpose.
Many partner universities require such proof of language proficiency as part of the application or admission process.
A Language Proficiency Certificate is a document that certifies your language skills at a specific level in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
To obtain this certificate, students of the University of Innsbruck can sit a Language Proficiency Test at the Language Centre.
Exams are currently offered for the following languages:

- French
- Spanish
At the Language Centre, you can take Language Proficiency Tests in the following languages:

Upon passing the test, you will receive a Certificate of Language Proficiency.
Certificates of language proficiency are issued for the following levels in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR):
- English: Level B2
- French: Level B1
- Spanish: Level B1
The type of language certificate required depends on the requirements of your partner university.

Yes. If you have been nominated for an Erasmus+ or another exchange programme and can provide proof of having successfully passed the Language Proficiency Test, you will receive a refund of Euro 30.

The content of the Language Proficiency Test varies depending on the language and level.
Generally, the exam comprises four sections that assess both receptive and productive skills:
Listening comprehension
You will listen to two audio recordings. The tasks involve matching statements and noting down answers in keywords. The test primarily assesses selective listening comprehension (grasping individual pieces of information and details).
Reading comprehension
You will work on two reading passages. The tasks involve matching statements and filling in information in note form. The test assesses selective comprehension and comprehension of details.
Writing
You will write your own text based on the given instructions.
Speaking
The oral section assesses your ability to interact in conversation. The test takes the form of a dialogue with other candidates. After a 10-minute preparation period, you will discuss a given topic together.
Yes. You are allowed to use a paper dictionary. Digital dictionaries are not permitted.
The Language Proficiency Test is considered passed if all four skills have been successfully completed:
- Listening comprehension
- Reading comprehension
- Writing
- Speaking
To pass the exam, you generally need to achieve 60 per cent in all skills. If you only achieve 50 per cent in one area, you can make up for this with above-average performance (over 60 per cent) in the other areas.
If a skill is not passed, the entire exam must be retaken.
You will receive your exam results and Language Proficiency Certificate in digital form by e-mail approximately five days after the oral exam.
Yes. Your exam materials will be kept at the Language Centre (Innrain 52f, 1st floor) for six months.
During this period, you may view the documents during our opening hours (Mon-Thu, 9:00-12:00 and 13:00-16:00). Please make an appointment by e-mailing Sprachenzentrum@uibk.ac.at.
