New Discovery: Laacher See Tephra Found in Lake Plansee

New Paper in G-cube

We have identified Laacher See volcanic ash in Lake Plansee—the first confirmed evidence of this major 13,000-year-old eruption in any Austrian lake.

Using high-resolution core scanning and electron probe microanalysis, visiting PhD student Verena Meier from Charles University Prague and our team were able to detect and verify this key tephra layer in our long cores retrieved from Lake Plansee. This discovery provides an important new chronological marker for Alpine Lake records and highlights the power of our advanced sediment core-analysis approach.
