MA Thesis: General Information

In order to complete your MA in English and American Studies, you need to submit a master's thesis (22,5 ECTS-Credits). The topic of the MA thesis must be taken from one of the selected elective modules (1-9). In order to officially declare your topic and thesis supervisor, you must have succefully completed the compulsory module 1. The MA thesis must be written in English.

The "Preparation of the Master's Thesis" (5 ECTS-Credits) precedes the actual composition of the MA thesis. The MA program is completed with the "Master's Thesis Defence (Defensio)" (2.5 ECTS-Credits).

For information regarding length, citation style, formatting, submission deadlines, etc., contact your thesis supervisor and follow their instructions precisely.

Master's Thesis Defense

The MA program is completed with the "Master's Thesis Defence" (2.5 ECTS-Credits), which is a 60-minute oral defense (defensio) of the MA thesis before a committee, which is comprised of three persons. At least one of them must be "habilitated" and the examiners must all be faculty members of the Departments of American Studies and/or English. Your thesis supervisor is typically part of the committee.

You can only register for the defense once a positive grade of your MA thesis has been submitted. The defense can then take place three weeks after the registration at the earliest. The "Prüfungsreferat" (Examinations Office) needs this time to check the formal requirements, obtain the necessary signatures, and send out the form for the minutes of the exam.
