PhD Programs

The doctoral program is designed to develop students into independent researchers. The centerpiece of the program is the research and writing of a doctoral dissertation.

Starting in fall 2026/27, the Faculty of Language, Literature and Culture offers the new doctoral program Sprach-, Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft (Linguistics, Literature Studies, and Cultural Studies). You can find more information here. 

Students who enrolled in the doctoral programs in Literature and Cultural Studies or Linguistics and Media Studies before October 1, 2026, may complete the program under the existing curriculum, provided they do so within no more than eight semesters from that date.
