Bachelor's Thesis

To complete your BA in English and American Studies, you need to submit one BA thesis. You need a thesis supervisor, who can be any faculty member in the Departments of English and American Studies. You need to attend the course SE Seminar mit Bachelorarbeit (Compulsory Module 16: Seminar with Bachelor Thesis). Your thesis supervisor will forward the grades of your thesis to the instructors of this course.

The length of a BA thesis is 30 to 40 pages (double-spaced, from "Introduction" to "Conclusion") and is equivalent to 7.5 ECTS-credits. They must be written in English and include the "Declaration of Academic Integrity" ("Eidesstattliche Erklärung)."

Your thesis supervisor will assess your thesis according to the official criteria ("Kriterien für Bachelorarbeiten PhilKult"). Make sure to submit the filled-in form "Proof of BA thesis" ("Nachweis über die BA-Arbeit") along with your thesis. Your thesis supervisor will forward the form as well as the grade to the relevant course instructor.

The thesis has to have a cover page that includes the following information: student name, student registration number, name of the course instructor, course title, semester of course attendance, name of the thesis advisor, date of submission.

For information regarding citation style, formatting, submission deadlines, etc., contact your thesis supervisor and follow their instructions precisely.

If your supervisor assesses your thesis as insufficient (5 – Nicht Genügend), you must enroll in the same course, find a supervisor, and write and submit a new thesis.
