With the approval of an Aurora European Universities Alliance by the European Commission, the joint activities were taken to a new level in summer 2020. Aurora: With students – For students
International experiences are an essential part of university studies and broaden the horizon. Aurora offers students various opportunities to gain these international experiences and to actively participate in shaping them.
These include mobility formats in different settings – such as international (virtual) courses and summer schools, but also a classic semester abroad – or networking activities within and between the individual university locations, such as those offered by the Aurora Student Schemes. Through funding from the European Commission, the OeAD and Universität Innsbruck, a variety of funding opportunities are also available for this purpose.

International collaborations and exchanges are based on trustful connections. Aurora, as a network of closely cooperating universities, offers this framework and stands for new possibilities and at the same time administratively simple ways.
For both scientists and administrative staff, new formats and offers are continuously developed along concrete challenge areas, funding opportunities for (scientific) exchange and teaching development are offered, and concrete results of Aurora collaborations are made available in the form of handouts. Through funding from the European Commission and the University of Innsbruck, a variety of funding opportunities are also available for all these activities.

A delegation of VU Amsterdam recently visited Universität Innsbruck as part of the ongoing activities within the Aurora European University Alliance. Jaap Gordijn, Anna Bon and Hans Akkermans are leading the Pilot Domain „Digital Society and Global Society“, one of the Aurora platforms for educational cooperation, to discuss a potentially new joint master program in this field.
The Aurora lecture series “Diversity in Higher Education” addresses the multi-faceted aspects of equality in the university. The aim is to bring together experts from this field who share their experience. One framework for ‘doing diversity’ are national and European politics. This was the focus of the discussion with Jean Asselborn, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs.
Today, the Aurora Universities Network has published its position paper on the future development of the European Education Area (EEA) which it sees linked to the European Research Area (ERA). Aurora consists of nine research-intensive universities in Europe with a common commitment to matching academic excellence with societal relevance.
The University of Iceland, founded in 1911, is a progressive comprehensive research university, situated in the heart of Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. Great emphasis is placed on strengthening research and educating young people, preparing them for taking an active part in society as well as making their mark on the global community. The University of Iceland is ranked no. 201-250 by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Currently some 13,300 students are enrolled at the University, including over 1,100 international students. The University of Iceland comprises five schools and 25 faculties offering over four hundred different programmes of study in all major academic disciplines, The University employs a large number of highly qualified academics who are a part of a strong global network within the scientific community. Dynamic and extensive collaboration with research institutions and industry is an important factor in the University’s operations.
A research-intensive university, the University of East Anglia (UEA) is ranked one of the United Kingdom’s top 15 universities, one of Europe’s top 100, and is also in the world’s top 100 for research excellence.
Located in the Norwich Research Park (NRP), UEA has 15,000 students (4,000 of them postgraduate) and 25 per cent of students are international. UEA shares the NRP with the research-intensive Institute of Food Research, the John Innes Centre, The Sainsbury Laboratory, the Earlham Institute and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
Specialisms range from environment and climate change, to health and nutrition, exploring issues of family and child policy, economics and business through to creative writing.

The Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) was created in 1991 by the Parliament of Catalonia. From the very first day, the university’s aim has been apparent: to place knowledge at the service of society to contribute to the social and economic development of the surrounding area, as it gradually transforms over time.
Located approximately 100 km south-west of Barcelona on the Mediterranean coast of Catalonia, the URV trains future professionals under the precepts of European harmonization, as a way of opening doors to a world of work without frontiers. Palacký University Olomouc is a university with a long-standing tradition. Founded in the 16th century, it is the oldest university in Moravia and the second-oldest university in the Czech Republic.

Founded in 1994, the University of Tetova welcomes and is open to all the students, teachers and collaborators. The South-West University “Neofit Rilski” was founded in 1976 in Blagoevgrad. With a history of over 40 years, the University has gained a reputation as a leader in the sphere of science and education in Bulgaria and on the Balkans. At present it is recognized as one of the forefront classical universities in South – Eastern Europe.
Pavol Jozef Šafárik University was established in 1959 as the second classical University in Slovakia. The current structure of P. J. Šafárik University includes five faculties – Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Public Administration and Faculty of Arts. At our University more than 7 500 students are studying.
