"Why we need Genomics in Limnoecology"
Abstract:
Understanding eco-evolutionary dynamics in freshwater ecosystems requires insights at the genomic level - yet this perspective remains underrepresented in limnology. In this talk, I argue for the integration of ecological genomics into long-term ecological research (LTER) to reveal hidden drivers of ecosystem change. I present a conceptual framework developed over recent years that combines genomic data with ecological monitoring, illustrated by findings from our work on the River Rhine. This includes results from biodiversity genetic/genomic assessments in floodplain systems, invasion biology of gobies, and metagenomic time-series analyses. Looking ahead, I outline plans for a full-dimensional LTER initiative at the Osterseen in Iffeldorf (TUM), with the goal of extending this genomics-informed approach to Alpine lake systems.
