Fertility in comparative perspective

Fertility has markedly declined across European countries in recent decades, including in the Euregio regions South Tyrol, Trentino, and Tyrol. This presents a range of challenges for societies, for example shortages in labor supply. With the Ring Seminar "Fertility in Comparative Perspective", we have brought together researchers of the three involved universities, expert scholars from abroad, and students of the three universities to discuss several dimensions of fertility, including individual preferences, structural barriers such as employment status of partners, contextual influences like work-family policies and GDP, the role of social stratification, and the impact of grandparental childcare.

The event achieved two key outcomes: it provided an internationally oriented learning experience for social science students centered on a critical societal and scientific issue, declining fertility, and fostered valuable research exchange among scholars from within the Euregio and beyond.
