Relevant bachelor's degrees at the University of Innsbruck:

Criteria for the determination of equivalence:

Admission to the master's degree programme may also be possible if a student has completed a bachelor's degree in a relevant related field. As part of the determination of equivalence, the following core areas of the completed bachelor's degree programme will be assessed:

  • At least 95 ECTS-Credits in subject-didactics and subject-didactics for History, Social Studies and Politcial Education
  • At least 40 ECTS-Credits in Educational Studies

In the event that equivalence has been established in principle but with certain qualifications missing for full equivalence, supplemental examinations may be required. These examinations must be completed during the master degree programme.

Recommended Course Sequence

The exemplary course sequence given below is recommended for full-time students beginning their study programme in the winter semester. The table shows one possible course sequence for the bachelor's programme and is not compulsory. Delays resulting from repeated examinations are not taken into account.

The standard duration of the study programme is 4 semesters or 120 ECTS-Credits, whereby according to the Universities Act of 2002, a workload of 1,500 (real) hours per academic year must be fulfilled, corresponding to 60 ECTS-Credits (one ECTS-Credit is equivalent to a workload of 25 hours).

Qualification Profile and Skills

The Secondary School Teacher Training Programme (General Education) qualifies its graduates as teachers in the selected subjects of general education / specialisations for all secondary schools (Neue Mittelschule, Polytechnische Schule, Academic Secondary Schools,  Intermediate and Higher Technical and Vocational Schools). This study programme also meets the requirements for teaching in intermediate and higher schools in the South Tyrol. In the Master’s programme the knowledge and skills acquired in the Bachelor’s programme is broadened and deepened. Graduates are able to solve problems of teaching in secondary schools in an innovative and creative way. They are able to independently deal with scientific or artistic topics resp. with regards to contents and by using appropriate methods. They are able to participate in expert discourse and to independently acquire more specialist, subject-didactical and pedagogical knowledge and to implement it in their teaching.

Graduates of the Master’s Programme Secondary School  Teacher Training (General Education) in the subject of History, Social Studies and Political Education acquire a historically founded understanding allowing a reflected, factual-analytical approach to the problems of a pluralistic society. They excel in logic-analytical, networked and problem-solution-oriented thinking.

The imparting of action and orientation knowledge as basic historic and political competences is a necessity for individual and social positioning. Lessons in History, Social Studies and Political Education are committed to knowledge about the past as an important precondition for a better understanding of the present and to the promoting of a critical awareness of perceptions of history, constructions and instrumentalisations of the past. Teachers are able to adjust their teaching to the individual needs of the learners, to assess and critically questions the effectiveness of their teaching.

Expected Learning Outcomes

Graduates have a sound subject-specific knowledge and methodological competences and are able to communicate historic developments and contexts with all their political, social, economic and cultural aspects in school and professional fields outside of school. Moreover, they are able to express themselves in a scientifically correct way and to substantiate argumentations and to demonstrate their expertise by finding innovative solutions to problems in the fields of historical studies, political education and subject didactics. They are experts for promoting personal development processes, for arranging learning situations, for accompanying learning processes and for evaluating learning outcomes.

Future Prospects: Occupational Profiles and Career Opportunities

The Master’s Programme Secondary School Teacher Training (General Education) qualifies for teaching at secondary schools. Based on the Bachelor’s Programme, the graduates acquire the competences needed for teaching in a way to meet the educational requirements of a developing school and society. 

With the qualifications acquired during the Master’s Programme, further job opportunities in the fields of the respective study programme and in the field of education, such as social and youth work or adult education, open up.
