Functional ontogeny of the circulatory system

The interdependence of gas exchange and circulation in embryonic and larval fish or amphibians represents an important aspect of our research. Of particular interest are the onset of neuronal and humoral regulation of the cardiovascular system, integration of circulation, gas exchange and embryonic developmental plasticity.

Special noninvasive computer-assisted image analysis allows to measure a broad portfolio of cardiovascular parameters. In parallel, molecular biological parameters such as gene and protein expression are considered to provide a holistic view of early developmental processes.

Our research will provide insight into the functional ontogeny of the circulatory system with particular interest in flexibility, with changing abiotic conditions in terms of oxygenation or temperature on one side- and biotic influences such as activity or genetic differences (mutations) on the other.
