History of the institute and former staff members
The Unit of Intelligent Transport Systems was established in January 2011 under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr. techn. Markus Mailer and combines the former institutes or departments of Road Engineering and Transport Planning and Railway Engineering and Public Transport.
The Institute for Road Construction and Traffic Planning was founded in 1971. Karl Rudelstorfer was head of the institute until 1991 and retired as full professor in 1992. In 1991, Heinz Tiefenthaler took over as head of the institute until his retirement in 2007. From 1995 until his appointment at the ETH Zurich in 1999, Kay Axhausen was professor for traffic engineering at the institute.
The Institute of Railways and Public Transport was occupied by O.Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Erich Kopp in 1976. After his retirement in 2006, the area of railroad engineering was continued by Mr. Günter Prager, ao.Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr. techn. Since his retirement in 2018, Ass.-Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr. techn. Steiner has been coordinating the activities in railroad engineering.
In 2006, these two institutes were renamed into (eponymous) work areas and assigned to the Institute of Infrastructure, which now also houses the newly established Intelligent Transportation Systems work area.
