Preparatory waste analyses for the introduction of underfloor systems

Client: IKB (Innsbrucker Kommunalbetriebe AG)

Implementation period: 2019 and 2020

Project description:

IKB (Innsbrucker Kommunalbetriebe AG) has installed underground collection systems for residual waste and recyclables at two locations with apartment blocks in the city of Innsbruck, replacing the existing large waste containers (MGB) 240 L (biowaste) and MGB 1.1 m³ (residual waste and recyclables). The system allows residual waste, biowaste, recyclables, waste paper, cardboard and cardboard packaging (PPK) and metals to be collected separately.

In order to determine the status of the waste composition at these two test sites, the Waste Treatment and Resource Management Department of the Institute for Infrastructure at the University of Innsbruck was commissioned to analyse the waste and recyclables at the pilot sites.

This analysis comprised two parts: firstly, the status prior to the installation of the underground collection systems was to be determined. The necessary waste analyses were carried out in September 2019. Another identical analysis was carried out in October 2020 after the underfloor collection systems had been set up. The waste analyses covered the material groups organic, PPK, cardboard, glass, metals, other and hazardous substances (batteries, WEEE, hazardous substances).
