Project content:

Urban drainage systems are confronted with increasingly heavy rainfall events due to climate change. More severe and more severe flooding are therefore possible consequences that will have to be managed in the future. Adaptation and prevention measures considered at an early stage can improve the resilience of the systems and protect the urban environment. Although there are already studies on such potential measures, little is known about their wider impacts. For example, increased implementation of green infrastructure has a positive effect on the groundwater balance and the recovery of the population. At the same time, space is scarce and cost-intensive, especially in densely populated urban areas.

The aim of the project is therefore to comprehensively analyse the positive and negative consequences of adaptation measures in order to be able to make the most reliable decisions possible for the future.

This analysis includes the following points:

  • Comparison of the effects of different adaptation measures not only in terms of their resilience and flexibility, but also in terms of social components such as increasing the quality of life of neighbouring residents and security of supply
  • Analysing the applicability of the measures with regard to different settlement sizes (scale effects)
  • Identification of the so-called 2nd order adaptation needs (adaptation of adaptation) at technical, legal and institutional level
  • Identification of further research needs and knowledge gaps that negatively impact development towards resilient and sustainable systems
  • Life cycle analysis of the adaptations and their 2nd order adaptations with their positive and negative aspects, including an estimate of the associated life cycle costs
