Recommended Course Sequence

The exemplary course sequence given below is recommended for full-time students beginning their study programme in the winter semester. The table shows one possible course sequence for the bachelor's programme and is not compulsory. Delays resulting from repeated examinations are not taken into account.

The standard duration of the study programme is 6 semesters or 180 ECTS-Credits, whereby according to the Universities Act of 2002, a workload of 1,500 (real) hours per academic year must be fulfilled, corresponding to 60 ECTS-Credits (one ECTS-Credit is equivalent to a workload of 25 hours).

Qualification Profile and Skills

The Secondary School Teacher Training Programme (General Education) qualifies its graduates as teachers in the selected subjects of general education / specializations for all secondary schools (Neue Mittelschule, Polytechnische Schule, Academic Secondary Schools,  Intermediate and Higher Technical and Vocational Schools). It consists of a Bachelor’s Programme and a subsequent Master’s Programme. It covers training in general education science, a pedagogical-practical training and a subject-specific and subject-didactic education in the two selected teaching subjects or in the selected teaching subject and the selected specialization.

Graduates of the Bachelor’s Programme Secondary School Teacher Training in the subject of Career Guidance / Life Skills are among other things able to

• teach pupils basic skills (e.g. the self-reflection ability and information research).
• show the pupils first educational and professional decision-making processes.
• support the pupils in their individual orientation and development process.
• ensure the provision of in-depth knowledge and teaching quality in terms of educational and vocational orientation as well as personality development.
• impart the necessary specialist and didactic skills for the professionalisation of pedagogical action in the compulsory subject “Career Guidance and Life Skills” at polytechnical schools (Polytechnische Schule) and in the compulsory subject of “Career Guidance” in secondary schools.
• act as a pupil and education consultant and after having gained sufficient professional experience and certification as Career Guidance-coordinator.
• oversee the school’s coordination of educational and career guidance in secondary schools in close cooperation with the school management.
• initiate and accompany the implementation of Career Guidance and Life Skills as a process.
• make the documentation and evaluation of the area of responsibility in collaboration with their colleagues.
• oversee activities in all areas of cultural life (e.g. in adult education), also outside of the professional field of “school”.
• plan, hold and reflect on their teaching in consideration of social, pedagogical and educational developments.
• focus on integration/inclusion, gender and diversity and remedial didactics with regard to the contents. The strengthening of social and personal skills is also an integral part of the Bachelor’s Programme.
• spot the weaknesses, talents and interests of the pupils and to implement teaching principles of Career Guidance and Life Skills in secondary schools.
• act transdisciplinary. Special focus is placed on the acquisition of interdisciplinary, school-type- and subject-crossing competences.
• understand the specific needs and requirements of different school types as well as the problem of transition.
• provide pupils with authentic professional experience through internships and field trips.
• think networked.
• enable multi-perspective problem dealing.
• create teaching and learning conditions that promote the mutual responsibility of the pupils for each other through strengthening of personal skills (self-confidence, personal responsibility, appreciation, critical abilities, conflict abilities, teamwork, respect).
• properly apply the acquired skills  with regard to promoting and developing social and personal competences among students. The students acquire competences of peer group education and are trained as buddy coaches. Furthermore, a Train the Trainer programme is part of the education, which offers the pupils the possibility to develop social, emotional and cognitive skills for their personal and professional life.
• incorporate the latest developments and scientific findings into the educational and teaching scientific work with secondary school pupils, taking into account the ongoing development of their own professionalism within the framework of lifelong learning.

Studies Induction and Orientation Stage (STEOP)

(1) The following exams have to be taken during the studies induction and orientation phase, which takes place in the first semester:

1. School as an Educational Institution and Role of the Teacher, VO 2, 2 ECTS-Credits
2. Basic Principles of Gender and Diversity BOLK, VO 1, 2 ECTS-Credits
   
3. Basic Principles of the World of Work, VO1, 1.5 ECTS-Credits
   

(2) Before the full completion of the introductory study and orientation phase, students can participate in courses amounting to 22 ECTS credits.

General Information

Expected Learning Outcomes

Graduates have a well-grounded knowledge in the fields of Career Guidance / Life Skills relevant for teaching at secondary schools, in the didactics of career guidance and life skills as well as in school pedagogy. They are able to formulate and argue scientifically correctly in these areas and at the interfaces to school practice, as well as to solve problems in an innovative way. They are able to promote personal development processes, to accompany Career Guidance / Life Skills learning processes and to assess learning outcomes.
