Mathias Rotach

Mathias Rotach studies the characteristics of exchange processes between the Atmospheric Boundary Layer in complex terrain and the free Troposphere, and thus characteristics of boundary layers in complex terrain – thereby putting a special focus on flows dynamically or thermodynamically influenced by mountains. His research approach is a combination between experimental and theoretical work, combined with numerical modelling.

About

Mathias Rotach studied environmental physics, specialising in atmospheric physics, at ETH Zurich, where he also obtained his doctorate in 1991. He has been Professor of Dynamic Meteorology at the University of Innsbruck since 2010. Presently, he leads the international research program TEAMx (Multi-scale Transport and Exchnge Processes in the Atmosphere over Mountains – programme and experiment). He is co-chairperson of the Program Board of the Hans-Ertel Center for Weather Research and is corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Science (ÖAW). His research interests focus on boundary layer dynamics, atmospheric dynamics, mountain weather and climate and air pollution modelling.
