Taut Structures and Where to Find Them _ LSU Lecture Series

Welcome to the lectures series 2023/24 at LSU, the Lightweight Structures Unit, Faculty of Architecture, Universität Innsbruck hosted by Professor Günther H. Filz.

Program of this talk: Light, taut and flexible structures; equilibrium of cables and membranes; geometric nonlinearity; numerical methods; some simple finite elements; pneumatics; wrinkling models; natural force density method; some applications on membrane structures.

Ruy Marcelo de Oliveira Pauletti. Civil Engineer (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, 1983 and University of Padua, 1986). Specialist in Plasma and Thermonuclear Fusion Engineering (University of Padua, 1986). Doctor of Sciences in Civil Engineering (Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo, 1994). Defended his Habilitation in Theory of Structures at the University of São Paulo, in 2003. Associate Professor (2003) and Professor of Structural Systems at the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo (2022). Visiting Professor at the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, Princeton University (2016), at the University of Technology of Wroclaw (2018) and at the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering of the University of Padua (2018).  Professor at the Graduate Programs on Structural Engineering and Architecture and Urban Studies of the University of São Paulo, holding courses on light structures and computational mechanics. Advisor for several Doctor and Master of Sciences students. Chair of the ‘I SLTE / I Simposio Latinoamericano de Tensoestruturas’ (São Paulo, 2002). Vice-Chair of the ‘II SLTE (Caracas, 2005).  Chairman of the ‘IASS-SLTE 2014 –International Association for Shell and Space Structures 2014 Symposium / VI SLTE’ (Brasilia, 2014). Member of the Honorary Committees of the IASS 2015 and the IASS 2017 Symposia. Member of the Organization and Scientific Committees of several international conferences. Member of the Executive Council of the IASS. Coordinator of the Research Group on Innovation in Structural Systems (GISE), at USP. Vice-President of the IASS since 2021. Chair of the Hangai Prize Committee of the IASS. Expert on the design and analysis of cable and membrane structures, tensegrities, and pneumatic structures, having been responsible for the analysis of several such structures in Brazil.
