We document a strong earthquake in the European Southern Alps during Roman Times

Using our lacustrine paleoseismic evaluation approach, we identified sedimentary evidence of a Roman Age earthquake near Egna, demonstrated the value of small groundwater-fed lakes as paleoseismic archives, applied ground motion modeling to constrain the event’s magnitude to MW ~6.5, and showed how paleoseismic records can refine Mmax estimations in low seismicity regions.
