PhD Project

Curating the in-between : (how) is that possible? A philosophical intervention in exhibition work in the museal context

What is the in-between? Is there one or more? Where is it located? What significance does it have for exhibition work in the museal context? What changes and new possibilities can arise? And how can it be dealt with philosophically?

The phenomenon of the in-between opens up spaces and places in a wide variety of contexts. These are characterized by differences, challenges, tensions, rifts, transitions, possibilities, interfaces and seams. The dissertation project explores the potential, role and significance of different forms of the in-between for the future of exhibition work in the museal context. The aim of the dissertation project is to develop an analysis of this potential as part of a philosophical intervention and then, building on this, to present a draft exhibition concept that shows how the in-between can be applied in exhibition work.

The project is embedded in a professional and scientific context that has increasingly dealt with the following topics in recent years: with questions about the future of museums, the how-to and best practices; with critical positions in the museal context (such as feminist, postcolonial and libertarian); with contemporary, innovative, future-oriented and inclusive ways for exhibitions and museum work, as well as with the question of the in-between, which is repeatedly posed in various (philosophical and other) contexts.

Starting from a critical-phenomenological approach that describes and analyzes various relevant in-betweens, the dissertation relates these to various possible critical attitudes and perspectives on curating a museum exhibition. Using an intersectional feminist curatorial approach that combines several concrete practical approaches and elements of exhibition work, a draft exhibition concept will then be designed and presented. In this way, the examination of the phenomenon of the in-between, its potentials and a concrete possibility of implementation, inscribes itself into the debates and the future of exhibition work in the museum context as well as philosophical reflection.
