New Curricula Starting Winter Semester 2026/27

New curricula will be introduced for all our study programs:
- Bachelor’s and Master’s Program in English and American Studies
- Bachelor’s and Master’s Program in Teacher Training: Subject English
The new curricula will take effect in Winter Semester 2026/27 (from October 1, 2026). We are currently preparing all relevant information and will publish detailed guidance – including course structures, equivalency lists, transition rules, and FAQs – during the Summer Semester. Thank you for your patience! Meanwhile, here is what you need to know right now.
First of all (and most importantly), do not panic – we’ve got you covered!
Change can feel overwhelming but there’s no need to worry. We are here to guide you through the new curricula and make sure you know exactly what to do next. Whether you are just starting your studies or are already well on your way, we will provide clear information, guidance, and support so that the transition is smooth and manageable. You are not alone – help is available every step of the way.
What will change?
In all programs, most courses will have new titles and, in many cases, updated content. There will also be completely new courses and topics. We have carefully designed these changes to make the programs even more attractive and engaging for students.
The Bachelor’s Program in Teacher Training will now last six semesters instead of eight. (The duration of the Master’s Program in Teacher Training as well as the Bachelor’s and Master’s Program in English and American Studies remains unchanged.)
In the new Bachelor’s program in English and American Studies, students are required to write only one BA thesis instead of the two that were previously mandatory.
The curricula for the Teacher Training Programs have already been published. Click here for the Bachelor’s and click here for the Master’s program. The curricula for the Bachelor’s and Master’s Programs English and American Studies are essentially done, too, but have not yet been published. Therefore, we cannot give you access to them just yet. Please stay tuned!
What can/should you do?
You have two options:
You will definitely be able to continue and complete your current study program (please note that certain time limits apply – see below). From Fall 2026 onward, we will only offer the courses from the new curricula. However, we will clearly explain which new course is equivalent to which old course.
Simply put: We will let you know in a detailed and easily digestible manner which of the new courses you still need to take in order to finish your studies.
Time limits apply:
The maximum time to complete is
- Bachelor's Program Teacher Training: 10 semesters (see Curriculum §17)
- Master's Program Teacher Training: 6 semesters (see Curriculum §16)
- Bachelor's Program English and American Studies: 8 semesters (see Curriculum §15)
- Master's Program English and American Studies: 6 semestsers (see Curriculum §14)
If not completed within the time limit, you will automatically be subject to the new curriculum.
2) Transfer to the new study program
You can also choose to transfer to the new study program. Unless you are close to completing your current study program, this is probably the best choice for you. Ideally, you should start the transfer after you have completed the courses for the respective semester. For example, if you want to switch programs in Winter Semester 2026/27, you can begin the transfer at the start of the general registration period for the winter semester, from early July 2026. It is best to start the transfer once you have received at least most of the grades for the courses of the summer semester.
Finally – and no less importantly
If you are worried or unsure, please contact us. The primary person responsible is our Studienbeauftragter, Ulrich Pallua. However, please also feel free to email Cornelia Klecker – particularly when it comes to the American Studies part of your studies. We are here to support you and will be happy to answer your questions.
