Research Data Management (RDM)

What is research data management?

“Which system can I use to store my data during the project? Where will my data be safely stored in the long term, even after the project has ended? Where can I publish my research data?”

Research data management begins at the initial project planning stage and ends with the archiving and re-use of your research data. By actively managing your data – for example, using a Data Management Plan – you and your project members maintain a clearer overview and enhance the reusability of the data. This preserves the scientific validity of your research data, safeguards your chain of evidence and ensures accessibility for third parties.

Publishing research data – why?

Both funding bodies and research institutions are increasingly requiring data to be published in order to promote replication and re-use in science and teaching. By publishing your data via a repository, you can make it uniquely citable using persistent identifiers (e.g. DOI, Handle...) and set out clear conditions for the re-use of your research data (licences).
