UNIverse
UNIverse is an open-source collaboration solution based on Nextcloud that allows you to easily and simply:
- Save, synchronise and share files.
- Edit documents together (integration of Collabora Online).
- Make video and audio calls with UNIverse Talk.
You can also share one or more files and folders on your computer and synchronise them with your UNIverse server. However, you need a client for this. You can find more information at Client installation.
To help you assess whether UNIverse is suitable for you, we have created the following overview of the university's systems:
| System | Chat function | Deck/Tasks/Kanban board | Video call | Storage location | Upload limits | Web conference recordings |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fileshare | x | x | x | University | 25 GB | x |
| UNIverse | Yes | Yes | Yes | University | 32 GB | x |
| Matrix/element | Yes | x | Yes | University | 30 MB | x |
| BigBlueButton | x (only used while rooms are active) | x | Yes | University | 30 MB | Yes |
Here you can see which quota is available for which rights:
| Rights | Fileshare | UNIverse |

| Employees | 100 GB | 100 GB |
| Students | 20 GB | 10 GB |
| External | 1MB | 1GB |
| Person-independent storage | x | Yes |
Instructions
In addition to our instructions, the official Nextcloud manual also provides a good overview of the functions: https://docs.nextcloud.com/server/latest/user_manual/de/contents.html
Please note that the official manual is the general documentation of the developer company and does not describe the instance of the university in detail.
For more detailed information on our instance, please follow the instructions below, which are constantly being expanded as required.

You can find your documents in the Files area.
You can find deleted files in the web interface in the Files area under Deleted files. If you have also permanently deleted the files in this area, they are no longer available.
You will need your regular university login details to log in to UNIverse. Please make sure that you log in with your personal account, as it is not possible to log in with functional accounts. If you encounter problems when entering your data, please contact zid-service@uibk.ac.at.
To save files from another cloud in UNIverse, it is necessary to save them locally on your device and then upload them to UNIverse.
The UNIverse client uses the Virtual Files option by default, which means that the files are not downloaded directly to the local device. Instead, a connection to the files in the cloud is established and the content is only downloaded on demand. To change this, click on the three dots in the settings of the synchronised folder and select Disable support for virtual files.
