Historical Book Collections

The university course provides basic competencies in the professional handling of historical book collections, taking into account historical conditions and current frameworks. Lecture units, practical exercises, and excursions cover the diversity of this material cultural heritage in its manuscript or printed form. Including digital reproduction forms, different methods of proper care and processing are presented.

Course Book Studies and Management of Historical Books (3 ECTS-Credits)

Students will be able to describe the various forms of documents, their development and their special features and apply this knowledge to the appropriate handling and professional processing of historical collections. They are able to apply methods and tools for digitising historical documents and can describe the associated fields of research and work.

Course Book and media research (3 ECTS-Credits)

Students will be able to describe the central aspects of book and media history and the development of the library system. They are able to reproduce and apply their acquired knowledge in the field of historical book production, distribution and reception.

Exhibitions and legal principles (2 ECTS-Credits)

Students will be able to independently design an exhibition, taking into account legal and conservation aspects as well as the possibilities and limitations of a museum presentation of historical collections.
