The department is a research and competence center for mobility behavior and the planning, construction, operation, and management of transportation systems for all modes of transport on road and rail networks.
It therefore also places greater emphasis on cross-modal, intermodal, and multimodal approaches. The main areas of teaching and research in this field are therefore transport planning, transport engineering, transport management, road construction and maintenance, railway construction and operation, and public transport.
Prof. Markus Mailer, Dipl.-Ing., Dr. techn., is the coordinator of the Intelligent Transport Systems department at the Faculty of Technical Sciences. Prof. Harald Loy, Dipl.-Ing., Dr. techn., is responsible for the railway engineering section of the department.
Mission - Mission Statement
Researching and designing sustainable mobility solutions and infrastructure!
Identity
- We are a research and competence center for road, rail and cable car transport systems and develop solutions for their planning, construction, operation and management.
- Our focus is on sustainable mobility behavior, resource-saving technologies and future-proof infrastructure.
- We combine science and practice — regionally and internationally.
- We work innovatively and interdisciplinarily.
- We put people and the environment at the center of our work and are committed to a world worth living in. Influenced by the special challenges of the Alpine region, we value the careful use of limited resources.
- As teachers, we want to pass on our knowledge and enthusiasm and provide excellent training in transportation.
- In this way, we empower our students to shape the future of mobility in a positive way.
History of the Institute
The Intelligent Transport Systems division was established in January 2011 under the leadership of Prof. Markus Mailer, PhD, and combines the former institutes and divisions of Road Construction and Traffic Planning as well as Railway Engineering and Public Transport.
The Institute of Road Construction and Traffic Planning was founded in 1971. Prof. Karl Rudelstorfer headed the institute until 1991 and retired as full professor in 1992. In 1991, Prof. Heinz Tiefenthaler took over as head of the institute until his retirement in 2007. From 1995 until his appointment to ETH Zurich in 1999, Prof. Kay Axhausen was a member of the institute as a professor of transportation.
The Institute of Railway Engineering and Public Transport was headed by Prof. Erich Kopp in 1976. After his retirement in 2006, the railway engineering division was taken over by Mr. Günter Prager, Associate Professor of Engineering. After his retirement in 2018, Mr. Steiner, Assistant Professor of Engineering, coordinated the activities in the railway engineering division. In September 2023, the department was taken over by Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr. techn. Harald Loy.
In 2006, these two institutes were renamed (with the same names) and assigned to the Institute for Infrastructure, which now also includes the newly founded Intelligent Transportation Systems division.
