University Entrance Qualification Examination

To start a degree study programme at a university, the general university entrance qualification in the form of a school-leaving certificate (Matura in Austria) or the working students’ entrance exam must be provided.  

However, the school-leaving certificate may be replaced by a subject-specific University Entrance Qualification Exam. This exam checks the knowledge required for being admitted to a study programme in a specific fields of study. The University Entrance Qualification Exam can only be taken for this specific study programme or programmes in the respective group of study programmes offered at the University of Innsbruck.

Which exams subjects have to be passed and the requirements can be taken from the ordinance of the Rectorate on the University Entrance Qualification Exam acc. to §64a Universities Act 2002(University of Innsbruck Bulletin from 28 June 2019, Issue 63, No. 565).

For applicants who were already admitted to take the University Entrance Qualification Exam before 30 June 2019, the regulations from 9 August 2010, Issue 50, No. 420 in the version of the University of Innsbruck Bulletin from 21 October 2015, Issue 2, No. 45 applies until the end of 30 June 2021:  

Consideration of the Master Craftsman Exam or Qualification Exam:

The University of Innsbruck supports examination candidates from underrepresented groups with a vocational or non-occupational background suitable for the desired study programme.   

Candidates who have successfully passed a Master Craftsman Exam or Qualification Exam acc. to the Trade, Commerce and Industry Regulation Act, Federal Law Gazette. No. 194/1994, or the Professional Training Act for the Agricultural and Forestry Business, Federal Law Gazette No. 298/1990 will be exempted from passing the elective courses of the University Entrance Qualification Exam acc. to §64a par. 5 no. 3 of the Universities Act upon request. 

Recognition of formal learning outcomes:

Insofar as they are equivalent in terms of content and scope to the prescribed exams and have been taken at a recognised educational institution, up to four exams can be recognised upon request.

Modified exam modalities:

Within the scope of the University Entrance Qualification Exam, disabled and/or chronically ill candidates, can apply for modified exam modalities.

Please consider to bring a valid passport or identity card to every exam!

After the written part of the exam, the oral exam is carried out by the examiner.

The following documents must be added to the application for admission to the University Entrance Qualification Exam:

  • proof of professional and extra-occupational background for the desired study programme
  • proof of EU/EEA citizenship
  • permanent residence - EC (§45 NAG)
  • CV (including in particular the educational background)

All documents and certificates must be submitted in the original and as a copy. After checking, the originals will be returned to you. Foreign-language documents must be translated into German by a court-sworn translator and, if necessary, officially certified. The translation and the certified document must be inextricably linked.
