General Pedagogical Aims

The project Prompt Lab: Documenting Prompts and Critically Reflecting the Effects of LLMs for Learning seeks to enhance discipline-specific learning at the University of Innsbruck through the effective integration of large language models (LLMs). For this, an interface able to collect and share effective prompts will be developed and promoted. This is a structured digital platform in which educators and students can upload and access effective AI prompts. It serves as a collaborative resource to explore, reuse, and refine high-quality prompts for academic purposes.

Specific Pedagogical Aims

For teaching staff the following initiatives will be implemented within this project:

  • designing a teaching guide with Open Educational Resources (OERs);
  • implementing tutoring sessions within discipline-specific courses to refine students’ prompting strategies in which students can evaluate the impact of incorporating LLMs in their learning;
  • developing an open online catalogue of student-created prompts;
  • raising awareness about the potential to enhance teaching and learning practices through effective and responsible use of LLMs;
  • fostering and disseminating the know-how about LLM-prompting, optionally with RAG;
  • collecting empirical data to assess learning outcomes.

For students the following initiatives will be implemented within this project:

  • offering live tutorials held by experienced tutors embedded in university courses;
  • enhancing students' prompt-engineering competences in line with their specific academic needs.

Research Aims

The aforementioned teaching initiatives will be accompanied by a research objective aimed at addressing the following research questions:

  • What are students' experiences with using prompting to enhance their own learning?
  • How do students perceive the use of prompting activities (PromptLab) as a means to develop their self-directed learning skills?
  • How do students view prompt writing as a task that contributes to strengthening their discipline-specific competences?
  • How do students experience the comparison between their own task output and the output generated by a LLM for the same task?
  • How do students' written reflections differ from researchers' classroom observations in capturing their engagement and learning outcomes from PromptLab?
  • How do students evaluate the methodology applied in relation to their prospective professional practices?

Ethics

All studies conducted as part of the PromptLab project adhere to strict ethical standards designed to protect participants’ privacy and rights. Participation is entirely voluntary, with participants being fully informed about the data collection procedures and their rights under EU GDPR regulations. Informed consent will be obtained prior to participation, and individuals may withdraw from the studies at any time without any negative consequences. All collected data will be fully anonymised, with only essential demographic details (e.g., age, sex, and study programme) recorded. During classroom observations and the analysis of written reflections, pseudonyms will be assigned to both students and lecturers to prevent identification. All data will be securely stored and accessible solely to authorised members of the research team.
