Co-operations

The project is being carried out with a number of international partners:

  • Investigations into the decorative technique of the subgeometric and overpainted ceramic wares were carried out in collaboration with the Department of Materials Science & Department of Inorganic Chemistry at Kiel University (Lorenz Kienle, Hendrik Groß, Stefan Schröder, Sebastian Mangelsen, Wiebke Engler) and the Department of Mineralogy and Petrography, University of Innsbruck (Peter Tropper).

  • The Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig (Alina Hiss) is conducting research on a kidney stone found in the Ascoli graves.

  • The Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle arti e Paesaggio per le province di Barletta-Andria-Trani e Foggia (formerly the Soprintendenza per I Beni Archeologici della Puglia) is supporting the project in terms of excavation permits and advice.

  • The anthropological analysis of the skeletal material will be carried out by Kristin von Heyking and colleagues from the company AnthroArch GbRMunich, Germany.

  • Neutron activation analyses (NAA) to clarify the origin of various ceramic wares from Ascoli Satriano were initially financed by Richard Posamentir, Tübingen, and carried out jointly with him, and then by Erich Kistler as part of the FWF project "Local potter's reactions" by Erich Kistler (University of Innsbruck). Sampling was carried out by Kai Riehle (Universities of Tübingen/Innsbruck), the analyses were performed by Hans Mommsen, (Helmholtz Institute for Radiation and Nuclear Physics, Bonn) and Johannes Sterba (Technical University, Vienna).

  • Organic residue analyses of selected ceramic vessels were carried out by Julie Dunne (Organic Geochemistry Unit, University of Bristol).
