About

The core of this research area is devoted to the comparison of political institutions and processes in consolidated liberal democracies. The research is conducted in two organisational subunits -"Comparative Political Institutions, Leadership and Governance" and"Austrian Politics in Comparative Perspective". The special focal points include, on the one hand, the international and historical comparative study of governments, rulers and parliaments, and, on the other hand, the empirical analysis of democratic elections and political communication. A cross-arena element of the research agenda is the examination of questions of "comparative institutional engineering" and democratic reform. In regional terms, the focus is on the democratic systems of Western Europe, with particular attention to Austria. These agendas are complemented by broader intercontinental and transnational references.
