Patrick Abel is an Assistant Professor of International Law with a focus on sustainability at the University of Innsbruck. His expertise covers International and EU Law as well as German Constitutional Law, with an emphasis on EU and international economic, environmental, climate and energy law. His research explores how public law shapes and responds to the transformation of society, the economy, and the state in the context of global environmental change.

About
Patrick Abel studied law at the universities of Münster, Seville, and Oxford. He holds a PhD in international law from the University of Göttingen and was a senior postdoctoral researcher at the University of Passau, pursuing a habilitation pursued in “Public Law and Transformation – The State and the EU in Amidst Global Environmental Change.” In 2023/2024, he was a Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence. In 2025, he was appointed Assistant Professor (tenure track) of International Law with a focus on sustainability at the University of Innsbruck.
Patrick Abel regularly advises public and private institutions as an independent expert in the fields of economic, climate, and energy law, as well as in climate policy negotiations.
