Bernhard Gems conducts research at the Unit of Hydraulic Engineering at the University of Innsbruck. His work focuses on morphodynamic processes in rivers, natural hazards associated with rivers, torrential processes and the effectiveness of protective structures against these hazards. He has over 20 years' experience in hydraulic modelling, both in the laboratory and using computer-aided methods. He contributes his expertise as a consultant to various expert committees and is co-author of the Austrian Climate Report (AAR2).

About
Bernhard Gems studied civil engineering at the University of Innsbruck, becoming involved in hydraulic engineering projects during his studies. In 2011, he completed his PhD at the Unit of Hydraulic Engineering by developing an integrative concept for modelling flood-related processes and evaluating flood protection measures in Alpine valleys.
He then remained at the university, first as a postdoctoral researcher and then as an assistant professor, obtaining his habilitation in 2017. He has since worked as an associate professor in hydraulic engineering, with a venia in „Hydraulic Engineering, Torrent Science and Torrent Protection“.
His research focuses on modelling torrential processes and sediment transport in rivers, as well as fluvial natural hazard processes in torrents and mountain rivers. Other areas of focus include monitoring and analysing technical protective measures against these natural hazards.
