Open Access publishing in Wiley journals

Articles from FWF-funded projects published in journals that are part of this agreementcan be published open access free of charge until the end of 2027 at the latest.

Please note that the criteria listed below must be met. In addition, the following FWF requirements must be complied with:

  • the article must be published with a CC BY licence
  • the acknowledgement must contain the following text:
    This research was funded in whole / in part by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) [grant DOI]. For open access purposes, the author has applied a CC BY public copyright license to any author accepted manuscript version arising from this submission.
    or for German-language publications:
    Diese Forschung wurde gänzlich / teilweise durch den Wissenschaftsfonds FWF finanziert [Grant-DOI]. Zum Zweck des freien Zugangs hat der:die Autor:in für jedwede akzeptierte Manuskriptversion, die sich aus dieser Einreichung ergibt, eine „Creative Commons Attribution CC BY“-Lizenz vergeben.
    Please make sure to enter the grant DOI instead of the project number.

Since 2018, university members with active employment contracts or students of the University of Innsbruck and the Medical University of Innsbruck can publish open access free of charge in around 1,300 Wiley hybrid and pure OA journals and have access to around 1,500 scientific papers.

Please note for pure OA journals:

  • the submission date of the article must be in 2024ff
  • the number of articles is limited, i.e. not all articles can be published Open Access free of charge under our agreement. First come, first served applies!
Which journals can researchers of the university publish in?

You can publish open access in 1,300 Wiley journals. You can find a list of all journals here.

Who can publish open access?

Eligible are authors, who

  • are corresponding authors of the article
  • are university members with active employment contracts or students of the University of Innsbruck or the Medical University of Innsbruck
  • whose articles were accepted by a journal that offers OnlineOpen
  • are publishing a primary research or review article


  • it is not permitted to retrospectively change the corresponding author
  • further publication fees such as color, publication, page or submission charges are not covered by this agreement!
Procedure/Verification Process:

Please indicate your affiliation with the University of Innsbruck or the Medical University of Innsbruck already when submitting your article. The verification of authors' affiliation with universities is done exclusively through the indication of the institution. After the acceptance of your contribution, choose the option “OnlineOpen” in the Wiley authors' interface. You can find more information for authors about the procedure here. The affiliation is verified by Wiley and the university/University Library. The article is published under a Creative Commons licence (CC BY).
