Open Access publishing with the American Society for Microbiology (ASM)

Articles from FWF-funded projects published in journals that are part of this agreement can be published open access free of charge until the end of 2027 at the latest.
Please note that the page charges (see Which costs for publication are covered?) cannot be processed via the FWF OAP!

Please note that the criteria listed below must be met. In addition, the following FWF requirements must be complied with:

  • the article must be published with a CC BY licence
  • the acknowledgement must contain the following text:
    This research was funded in whole / in part by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) [grant DOI]. For open access purposes, the author has applied a CC BY public copyright license to any author accepted manuscript version arising from this submission.
    or for German-language publications:
    Diese Forschung wurde gänzlich / teilweise durch den Wissenschaftsfonds FWF finanziert [Grant-DOI]. Zum Zweck des freien Zugangs hat der:die Autor:in für jedwede akzeptierte Manuskriptversion, die sich aus dieser Einreichung ergibt, eine „Creative Commons Attribution CC BY“-Lizenz vergeben.

Since January 2025, university members with active employment contracts or students of the University of Innsbruck or the Medical University of Innsbruck have had the opportunity to publish open access free of charge in six journals of ASM. However, ASM charges “page charges” for the publication, which are discounted for participants. If authorized authors are also ASM members, a further discount is granted. All information can be found at: What publication costs are covered?

Which journals can researchers of the university publish in?

You can publish Open Access in six journals of ASM. You can find a list of titles here.

Who can publish open access?

Eligible are authors, who

  • are authors of the articles
  • are university members with active employment contracts or students of the University of Innsbruck or the Medical University of Innsbruck
  • use their institutional email address in the process of submission
  • are publishing a research article, case report, brief report, review or rapid communications
What publication costs are covered?

In this Subscribe to Open model (S2O model), there are no Article Processing Charges (APCs) for open access publishing. However, ASM charges page charges for S2O publications, which are not covered by this agreement and are not covered by ULBT. The amount of this page charge is discounted for all subscribing institutions (S2O subscribers), see column Non-Member, authors who are ASM members receive an additional discount, see column ASM Member.

The following maximum amounts for page charges apply for 2025 - regardless of the length of the article: 
Non-Member Page Charges $ 4.300
Member Page Charges $ 2150.

Procedure/Verification Process:

The publisher recognizes eligible authors by indicating the institution (affiliation) and the institutional email address during the submission process. Authors from a participating institution are guaranteed in any case that submitted articles can be published Open Access in the S2O model, even if the global “S2O target” is not reached. Articles are published exclusively under a CC BY license.
