The department was founded in the winter semester of 1925/26 by converting a collection of musical teaching materials into a teaching pulpit. Following the establishment of the Department of Musicology at the University of Vienna in 1898, this was the first subject-specific teaching centre in the federal states. The first director was Rudolf von Ficker, who had been organising and offering music-related courses as part of the History Department since 1920; he was followed by Wilhelm Fischer from 1931-1938, Wilhelm Ehmann from 1940-1945, Wilhelm Fischer again from 1948-1957, Hans von Zingerle from 1957-1970, Walter Salmen from 1973-1992, Tilman Seebaß from 1993-2007, Monika Fink from 2008-2013 and Federico Celestini since March 2013.
In the first decades, teaching and research focussed on stylistics based on Guido Adler's model. During the Nazi era, there was a shift towards political and ideological content in the interests of those in power. It was not until Wilhelm Fischer's return in 1948 that the pre-war activities could be resumed.

Courses at the Department of Musicology take place in two seminar rooms and a lecture theatre.
Students have access to a common room with several seats and a large meeting table. The room is equipped with a small kitchenette.
Students can also use the institute's own multifunctional room . This also has a small kitchenette including a refrigerator. The room also contains various music instruments and compact digital audio workstations, which are equipped for professional sound recording and editing and can be used by students at any time (free of charge). A large presentation screen can also be used in the room.
Musicology students also have the opportunity to use the rehearsal rooms at the Mozarteum Innsbruck.

The library in the "House of Music" Innsbruck combines the holdings of three renowned music libraries: the Tyrolean State Conservatory, the Department of Musicology at the University of Innsbruck and the Mozarteum (Innsbruck dependance). In addition to its comprehensive collection, which is constantly being expanded with new publications, the library also offers one of the most beautiful working atmospheres for students with its marvellous view of the city.
